This Week’s Headlines

Auburn baseball… pitched its second straight shutout on Tuesday night by beating UAB, 4-0. Three pitchers — Andrew Mitchell, Gabe Klobosits and Ryan Watson — contributed to the shutout with Klobosits getting the bulk of the day’s work.

Pitching six innings, allowing six hits (four of which never left the infield) and allowing no runs, Klobosits redeemed himself following a poor start last month against Florida A&M. He’s also been recovering from an injury that he suffered against Lipscomb earlier this month.

Tuesday night’s shutout was the seventh of the season for Auburn — the most in the nation.

Auburn moves to 13-5 on the year following the weekday victory, which, as I mentioned last week, are crucial games for the Tigers to win. Following a game with Jacksonville State tonight, Auburn hosts fifth-ranked Florida this weekend in its SEC opening series.

The women’s basketball team… was on the bubble heading into the selection show on Monday. Many were unsure whether a 17-14 overall record would be enough to get into the tournament, especially with as many late losses the Tigers had toward the final stretch of the regular season.

Auburn lost six of its last eight games in the regular season before losing a seventh to Georgia in the SEC Tournament in the first round. But the Tigers’ successful stretch at the beginning of the season proved to be enough to the committee to earn them a bid.

Auburn, the No. 11 seed, will face sixth-seeded N.C. State (22-8) in Austin, Texas in the first round of the tournament.

Following a brutal mercy-rule shutout… in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader against LSU, Auburn softball rebounded strongly to win the weekend series with a 5-4 victory in the day’s second game.

Auburn shortstop Haley Fagan was named the SEC softball Player of the Week, hitting .556 in four games last week and reaching base in 10 of her 14 plate appearances.

The fourth-ranked Tigers are being tested early in the season in the toughest conference in the sport, but are holding strong thus far this season. The team heads to South Florida this weekend to compete in a tournament at USF against North Dakota State, USF, Illinois, Ohio State and LIU Brooklyn.

The tournament will be a nice test for the team before they head to Gainesville the following weekend to take on the second-ranked Gators.
