Gary Neville: Paul Pogba can be Man United’s best player this season

Gary Neville believes Paul Pogba can be Manchester United’s best player this season if the midfielder decides to ignore the speculation surrounding his future.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to name Pogba in his starting XI for the visit of bitter rivals Chelsea FC in their Premier League opener at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Pogba acquitted himself well in the middle of the park as goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and summer signing Daniel James secured a resounding 4-0 win.

The 26-year-old was credited with assists for both Rashford and James’ goals.

The France international finished with 84 touches, 62 completed passes and one completed dribble in a dominant performance against the inexperienced Mason Mount.

Pogba continues to be linked with La Liga giants Real Madrid and Serie A champions Juventus, which will concern Manchester United supporters given that the Italian and Spanish transfer windows remain open.

Former Manchester United defender Neville believes Pogba could be the key player for Solskjaer this season if the French midfielder decides to knuckle down at Old Trafford.

“I think Pogba did well and he played a brilliant pass through for Rashford’s goal,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“He can play better, but last season I said there were a number of players who were demonstrating week in, week out that they didn’t look like they wanted to be at the club and Paul was one of them.

“I said those players needed to be let go but definitely not all at once because they are probably the best players in the team. Ole is going to have to transition those players out of the club if they do want to leave.

“There is always speculation around Pogba and I don’t think it will go away, but if he can get his head down for this season and be the dominant force in midfield then he is Manchester United’s best player. There is no doubt about it.

“He wants to be in a winning team but can he make Manchester United a winning team?”

Pogba has been criticised for showing a lack of consistency throughout his Manchester United career so far.

The Red Devils star moved to Manchester United in a club record £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in 2016.

However, the World Cup winner has only delivered the Europa League and League Cup crowns so far.
