Andy Cole has admitted that he is surprised by how badly Alvaro Morata has struggled at Chelsea FC.
The Blues paid £60m to sign Morata from the Champions League holders ahead of Diego Costa’s return to Atletico Madrid.
The 26-year-old initially hit the ground running to suggest that he would be a big success in England.
However, Morata’s goals have since dried up and the Chelsea FC striker has found his first-team opportunities limited this term.
Chelsea FC manager Maurizio Sarri has been more inclined to use Eden Hazard in a lone striker role rather than Morata in the current campaign.
Morata’s struggles at the west London side have resulted in speculation linking the Spanish striker with a return to La Liga.
A report on Sunday suggested that the Chelsea FC flop was set to undergo a medical at Atletico Madrid ahead of a potential return to Spain’s capital.
Former Manchester United striker Cole has admitted his surprise that Morata has struggled so badly in England.
“I didn’t think Morata would struggle,” Cole told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“He scored goals in Italy and Spain. I thought he would be fantastic here.”
Chelsea FC signed Olivier Giroud in the 2018 January transfer window but the France international has also struggled in front of goal.
Gonzalo Higuain’s loan move to Chelsea FC was completed last week to add more firepower to the west London side.
The Blues are looking to finish in the top four for the first time under Sarri, who took over the reins of the club from his compatriot Maurizio Sarri in the summer.
