Sky Sports pundit: 23-year-old can be the future for Man United

Anthony Martial can be the future for Manchester United, according to Matt Upson.

The 23-year-old striker has been in decent form for the Red Devils so far this season and has scored eight goals and made one assist in 18 Premier League games.

According to Sky Sports, Martial is close to agreeing a new five-year contract with the Red Devils to commit his long-term future to the club following questions about his situation at Old Trafford.

Martial has been a regular fixture in the Manchester United team this season since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought in as the club’s new interim manager last month.

And former England defender Upson feels that Martial can become the Red Devils’ key player if he is able to live up to his potential at Old Trafford alongside Marcus Rashford, who has also been in top form recently.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Upson said: “I think the feelgood factor around Manchester United has definitely helped these contract talks develop.

“Since Jose Mourinho left the club there has been a completely different feeling in the dressing room and all around the club.

“It’s very positive for him. It’s an amazing club to play for and the fact he has been playing a bit more central or up front in a two under Solskjaer has really helped him.

“It is a signal for me that they are moving forward and, especially with Marcus Rashford there, those two could be the future in that centre-forward position for them.”

Upson added: “He was indifferent with Mourinho, like a lot of the players were, but if they get something consistent from him and he’s happy then they have a really good player.

“It is definitely good for Anthony Martial and for Manchester United.”

Martial will be hoping to start for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to FA Cup action with a fourth-round clash against Arsenal at The Emirates on Friday night.

The Red Devils still have a 100 per cent record under new boss Solskjaer, and they are currently level on points with fifth-placed Arsenal in the Premier League table.
