John Barnes reacts to Andy Robertson’s new Liverpool FC deal

John Barnes has expressed his delight that Liverpool FC have managed to tie down Andy Robertson to a new long-term deal – but the Reds legend has now urged the Scottish defender to build on his impressive start at Anfield.

Robertson put pen to paper on a deal on Thursday night that will reportedly keep the Liverpool FC left-back at the 18-time English champions until 2023.

The Merseyside outfit signed Robertson in an £8m deal from Championship side Hull City in the 2017 summer transfer window as Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp looked to tackle a real area of weakness in his team.

Robertson started the 2017-18 season as second choice behind Alberto Moreno but the Scotland international managed to break into the team in December 2017 and the Liverpool FC star hasn’t looked back.

The 24-year-old was even part of the Liverpool FC team that reached the Champions League final before a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Kiev showpiece back in May to get some European experience under his belt.

Former Liverpool FC captain Barnes was pleased to see the Reds secure Robertson’s long-term future.

“All the players who come to Liverpool want to stay at Liverpool now,” said Barnes, who was speaking exclusively to The Sport Review for bookmaker comparison platform

“Andy Robertson has been sensational this year. I never thought he was ever going to leave anyway but it is always good to tie players down.

“It is fantastic news for both him and Liverpool. It is well deserved.”

Barnes believes that Robertson has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top full-backs but warned the challenge for Scot will be finding a high level of consistency.

Barnes continued: “He is this year, but I always say you have to show consistency over a long time.

“You can’t do well for a few months but then go off the boil. I don’t think it will happen to Andy. I have full confidence he will do this for his full career at Liverpool and at the moment he is one of the best full-backs in the country.

“That’s not important. What’s important is to continue that throughout his career.”

The former Dundee United full-back has made five assists in 77 appearances in all competitions since his move to Liverpool FC over 18 months ago.

The Liverpool FC boss has settled on Trent Alexander-Arnold and Robertson as his first-choice full-backs over the past year or so.

The Reds will take on Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16 next month.
