Martin Keown has described Liverpool FC star Virgil van Dijk as the “top dog” when it comes to defending.
Van Dijk’s arrival helped to reinforce the Liverpool FC defence thanks to his composure and leadership qualities after the Reds had struggled at the back in the opening half of the 2017-18 season.
Liverpool FC signed Brazil international Alisson Becker in a £67m deal from Serie A giants AS Roma in the summer to replace Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet.
The Merseyside outfit have the best defensive record in the Premier League after Liverpool FC conceded eight times in 20 games in the English top flight.
Van Dijk has helped Liverpool FC to keep 12 clean sheets in the Premier League to highlight their remarkable transformation over the past 12 months or so.
Former Arsenal centre-half Keown delivered his glowing verdict on Van Dijk before Liverpool FC were resounding 5-1 winners against Arsenal on Saturday evening.
“The sheer pace that he has is quite remarkable,” Keown told BT Sport.
“Of course, he has that mobility and that reading of the game [too]. He’s top dog in that position.
“It’s top defending. Everything now is coming to fruition and he’s becoming the player that everyone expected him to be.
“He was there for the taking, he was at Celtic for many years and no one took him. He has a massive point to prove this boy, and boy is he doing it.”
Van Dijk has partnered Joe Gomez at centre-half throughout most of the Premier League campaign before the England international suffered an injury during a 3-1 win at Burnley in early December.
Dejan Lovren has filled Gomez’s void over the past few weeks.
