Ryan Giggs believes Paul Pogba’s best position is in an advanced role in the Manchester United team.
The France international was an unused substitute in Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Fulham last weekend, to prompt further questions about his future.
The Red Devils star did start in a 2-1 loss at Valencia in the Champions League, but the game was a dead rubber for the visitors given their last-16 spot was already assured.
Pogba was heavily criticised for his ill disciplined performance in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Southampton at the start of December, promoting Mourinho to drop the Frenchman.
The World Cup winner has been linked with a return to Juventus since Mourinho stripped the 25-year-old of the Manchester United vice captaincy.
Giggs played alongside Pogba during the twilight years of his Manchester United career before Sir Alex Ferguson sold the talented French playmaker to the Italian side in 2012.
The Manchester United legend believes Pogba needs to be used in a more attacking role in Mourinho’s starting XI.
“We all know what he’s capable of because we’ve seen it, he just has to do it regularly,” Giggs told Sky Sports.
“It does help with the players around you, of course, but Jose has tried him in different positions, in that deeper role, just off the front and off the left. For me, he’s better a little bit further up in an attacking midfield role with a three in midfield, but you need the players around him also.
“It’s down to Paul – every United fan was excited when we signed him because of what he is capable of and what he achieved at Juventus and with France, but he’s just not done it on that consistent basis and you can see why Jose left him out.”
Pogba has won the Europa League and the League Cup since his return to Manchester United in a club record £89m deal from Juventus in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Manchester United signed Pogba to help them challenge for the Premier League title once again, but the Red Devils haven’t come close since the versatile midfielder’s return to Old Trafford.
