Graeme Souness outlines where Liverpool FC will win or lose title

Graeme Souness believes the biggest challenge for Liverpool FC will be winning the games against lesser opposition in the title race.

The Reds are the only unbeaten team left in the Premier League this season after Manchester City lost 2-0 to Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Liverpool FC finished the 16th round of fixtures in top spot thanks to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp’s side ended a challenging week on an impressive note after Liverpool FC left it late in a 1-0 win against Everton before the Reds came from behind in a 3-1 victory at Burnley.

The 18-time English champions will face Manchester United in their next Premier League fixture as Liverpool FC look to avoid a potential upset against Jose Mourinho’s side.

Liverpool FC have failed to beat Manchester United in their last two meetings at Anfield as Mourinho deployed defensive tactics to thwart Klopp’s free-flowing attack.

Former Liverpool FC captain Souness, who won the English top flight title five times at the Anfield outfit, highlighted the keys to the title race for the Reds.

“If you’re a big club, generally, the big games take care of themselves – the games against your direct rivals,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“It’s the games against the perceived lesser teams that you can slip up in. For Liverpool and Man City, they’ll be driving each other on.

“They know they just cannot afford to slip up. Liverpool cannot afford to go five or six points behind City, with the title race is over before Christmas, so they have to be bang at it.

“But City have to show up every game as well. City are a scalp, they and Liverpool are the two biggest scalps to have and they can get beaten by the lesser teams if they’re not at it.”

Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table in the past two seasons under Klopp.

The Reds have never won the Premier League title, finishing in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
