Paul Merson: Why I rate Jose Mourinho above Liverpool FC boss

Paul Merson has reminded Liverpool FC supporters that Jurgen Klopp still hasn’t won a trophy, unlike proven winner Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United will make the trip to Liverpool FC in their next Premier League fixture on Sunday evening as Klopp’s side look to win their fourth successive top-flight outing.

The Reds have only dropped points in stalemates with Arsenal, Chelsea FC and Manchester City in the Premier League this term, while the Red Devils have also drawn with the two London clubs.

However, Mourinho’s side did suffer a humiliation at the hands of their city rivals after the defending Premier League champions were 3-1 winners against Manchester United at The Etihad last month.

Manchester United may have struggled for consistency under Mourinho, but the Red Devils haven’t lost at Anfield since the Portuguese head coach took over the reins in May 2016.

The Red Devils boss has faced relentless pressure this season following Manchester United’s poor performances in the Premier League, winning seven of their 16 games so far.

However, former Arsenal playmaker Merson was quick to defend Mourinho in light of recent praise of his Liverpool FC rival Klopp ahead of the meeting between the bitter rivals at Anfield this weekend.

“One’s been in the game and won everything in the last 10 years, and the other’s just come over and not won anything yet,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“People are quick to write Mourinho off. It’s like Klopp’s the man and Mourinho’s nothing but he won everything wherever he went for 10 years. Klopp has done great, but he has not won anything.

“One has the people feeding out of his hand, but Jose likes people not to like him, I think. Klopp wants the world on his side and Jose says the world’s against us.

“Klopp seems to have the players on his side but Jose seems to have half lost them. Klopp has bought brilliantly, Jose has bought terribly – I don’t know if that’s the club or the manager, but that’s how it is.

“I don’t want to say Jose does not seem interested, but if he’s not winning anything, it does not rock his boat. That’s just me saying that. He’s a winner – coming third and fourth won’t do it for him. Other managers just starting out like Klopp – over here at least – have still had it as a challenge to get in the top four or come second and third. I don’t see that with Mourinho.”

Manchester United finished in second place above Liverpool FC last term, although the Reds prioritised winning the Champions League.
