Danny Murphy has hailed the impact of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk on the Liverpool FC team ahead of Sunday’s clash against Manchester United.
The Reds have managed to put together a sustained title challenge in the current campaign after some smart investment in new playing staff of the past 12 months.
Liverpool FC signed Van Dijk in a £75m deal from Southampton in the January transfer window to finally tackle a clear weakness in the centre of defence.
Jurgen Klopp replaced Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet with Alisson – and the Brazil number one hasn’t put a foot wrong since taking over from the two shot stoppers.
Liverpool FC finished the 16th round of fixtures in the Premier League with the best defensive record in the English top flight, having conceded a mere six times.
Manchester City, on the other hand, have let in nine goals to underline Liverpool FC’s progress since the signings of Alisson and Van Dijk.
Former Liverpool FC midfielder Murphy highlighted the impact of the two signings on Klopp’s team.
“They have competition for places which helps,” Murphy told BBC Sport.
“Van Dijk and Alisson have made such a difference. They don’t have to play that well to win matches any more. It’s a big plus. They are incredible footballers who have made a big difference.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place to secure a spot in the Champions League in their last two seasons under Klopp.
However, the German head coach is yet to oversee a title challenge since replacing Brendan Rodgers at the club.
