Ex-Liverpool FC star tells Fabinho and Naby Keita to step up

John Aldridge believes Liverpool FC will need Fabinho and Naby Keita to continue to improve if Jurgen Klopp doesn’t make any new signings in January.

The Reds boss has indicated that the Merseyside outfit won’t be active in the upcoming transfer window despite the temptation to add more quality to his squad to aide their title challenge.

Liverpool FC invested a lot of money in new playing staff in the summer after Klopp signed AS Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker, RB Leipzig midfielder Keita, AS Monaco star Fabinho and Stoke City playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri.

Alisson and Shaqiri have already made significant contributions to Klopp’s team, but the German head coach has used Fabinho and Keita sparingly in the current campaign.

Keita started their opening four Premier League games but the Guinea international has struggled with fitness issues over the past couple of months.

Fabinho has been given more first-team minutes in the last month and the Brazilian holding midfielder particularly impressed in a 4-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.

However, former Liverpool FC striker Aldridge emphasised that Fabinho and Keita will need to step up if the Reds opt against making new signings in the January transfer window.

“Klopp has said he doesn’t intend to add to the squad in January,” Aldridge told the Liverpool Echo.

“If that proves to be right then we need those who have been on the fringes so far to step up.

“We need Fabinho to settle down and keep improving in the second half of the season.

“We also need Naby Keita to show what a good player he can be because we’ve only seen flashes of what he can do so far.

“The same goes for the likes of Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge, who have found their opportunities limited.

“You need game changers who can come off the bench when things aren’t going right and make an impact.

“If we don’t buy in January then we need to trust Klopp’s judgement.

“He knows what he’s doing.”

Liverpool FC finished in fourth spot in the Premier League table last term but Klopp’s side are being billed as title challengers in the current campaign.
