France boss breaks silence on N’Golo Kante’s new Chelsea FC role under Maurizio Sarri

Didier Deschamps has backed Maurizio Sarri’s decision to use N’Golo Kante in a more advanced role in the Chelsea FC team this season.

Sarri was appointed as Conte’s replacement in the summer and wasted no time signing Italy international Jorginho from his former club Napoli.

Jorginho has been inserted into the Chelsea FC team in a holding midfield role and the summer signing has been Sarri’s general on the pitch.

To accommodate the Italian star, Sarri has used Kante in a more advanced role despite the Frenchman being widely considered the Premier League’s best defensive midfielder.

Kante has acquitted himself well with one goal and one assist in 12 games in the Premier League so far.

France manager Deschamps appeared to endorse Sarri’s decision to use Kante in a new role.

“He is able [to play higher up the pitch],” Deschamps is quoted as saying by Metro. “He can also play deeper where he is very useful and very powerful.

“At Chelsea he’s in more of a creative role. With what his coach asks him, and his system, he is brought to play very high.

“He has more freedom. He is very comfortable with the ball, so it doesn’t cause him any problems. He’s always having fun.

“Kante also takes it by playing deeper, but he is now in the offensive part, but he still has the quality of cutting out passes and recovering balls.

“He is a little more involved in attacks, in the last third or the penultimate pass. This is less frequent when he’s playing in front of the defence.”

The World Cup winner has established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League since his move to England from Caen in 2015.

Kante was a key member of Claudio Ranieri’s title-winning team in 2015-16 after Leicester City won an unprecedented Premier League title ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea FC swooped to sign the France holding midfielder in a £34m deal in the 2016 summer transfer window to improve Antonio Conte’s squad.

Kante helped to transform the Blues into Premier League champions and was awarded the PFA player of the year for his role in their title success.

The 27-year-old continued to excel throughout the 2017-18 season despite Chelsea FC’s alarming dip in the Italian head coach’s second campaign in charge.
