Mesut Ozil turned down some “crazy” offers in favour of remaining at Arsenal, according to the German’s agent.
The World Cup winner entered the final 12 months of his contract in the 2017-18 season to fuel speculation surrounding his future at the north London side.
Alexis Sanchez moved to Manchester United in January as the Gunners looked to avoid losing the Chile international on a free transfer in the 2018 summer transfer window.
Ozil was in an identical position and was linked with a switch to Old Trafford, too, having previously worked with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.
However, the 30-year-old became the best paid player in Arsenal’s history when the number 10 signed a new contract thought to be worth £350,000 a week at The Emirates in February.
His agent, Dr Erkut Sogut, has shed light on the interest in Ozil but has underlined the playmaker’s affection for Arsenal.
“We had some really big offers from Asia, there were some crazy offers. But for Mesut, money was by no means the biggest factor,” Sogut told the Evening Standard.
“Money is definitely one important thing to consider, but people must remember that footballing ability is just one aspect of a contract negotiation. The commercial impact of a footballer is crucial nowadays.
“Mesut has the biggest social media following of any player in the Premier League and I just read that his shirt numbers [sales] were the largest at the club.
“At the end of the day, this is all information that has to be taken into consideration.
“So, the commercial side is very big with a player like Mesut, who has played in different countries and was the No. 10 of the national team, where he won the World Cup.
“His market is worldwide. The club makes money out of these players as well, but it came down to what was in his heart.
“We were free to sign with other clubs and in the end Mesut loves the club. I put everything to him and he just said, ‘This is my home, I want to be here’.”
Ozil has been regularly criticised for his underwhelming performances since his move to Arsenal from Real Madrid in a £42.5m deal in the 2013 summer transfer window.
The German star was handed the captain’s armband in the current campaign under Unai Emery in the absence of Petr Cech to underline the manager’s faith in Ozil.
The Arsenal No10 has scored three times and has made one assist in 10 games in the Premier League this season to make a promising start to life under Emery.
