Jamie Redknapp: 27-year-old has become Chelsea FC leader

Jamie Redknapp has credited Eden Hazard with blossoming into a leader at Chelsea FC.

The Belgium international’s future was a source of debate in the summer as Hazard was linked with a potential move to Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s switch to Juventus left Real Madrid with a void to fill up front, serving to fuel the speculation surrounding Hazard.

However, los Blancos ended up signing Chelsea FC’s Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois rather than Hazard before the close of the transfer window.

Hazard has made a brilliant start to the Premier League campaign after Maurizio Sarri took over the reins from Antonio Conte in early July.

The former Napoli manager has given Hazard a new lease of life at the west London side by allowing the Belgium star to play with more freedom.

The move has paid dividends given the 27-year-old has scored seven times in nine games in the Premier League this season to sit at the top of the goal-scoring charts.

Former Liverpool FC and Tottenham midfielder Redknapp has been impressed by Hazard’s willingness to accept more responsibility in the Chelsea FC team.

Redknapp told Sky Sports: “You ask Hazard “what are you thinking here” and he says “well, I just want to get into the box and take someone on!” I love that. It’s innocence, like a kid in a school playground.

“But actually Hazard’s become a leader for that Chelsea team now.

“He took on more responsibility with Belgium at the World Cup, where he carried the burden for them, and he feels like that’s what he has to do for Chelsea now.”

Hazard had some good tutors when it comes to leading a team given the Belgian star played alongside the club’s iconic captain John Terry, as well as Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.

The former Lille playmaker has delivered some great performances for Chelsea FC over the past six seasons to culminate in three Premier League titles, the Europa League, the FA Cup and two League Cups.

Hazard has less than 24 months to run on his current deal and the Chelsea FC number 10 hasn’t reached an agreement over a new contract despite negotiations with the west London side.

Chelsea FC will be hoping to avoid a situation where Hazard starts the 2019-20 season with less than 12 months to run on his current deal.
