Paul Merson believes that Manchester United’s failure to bring in any new defenders in the summer transfer window is part of the reason for their struggles this term.
The Red Devils have found themselves under intense pressure in recent days after they lost their last two games in the Premier League to leave them six points off the pace in the race for the title.
Manchester United were hoping to be one of the main contenders for the title this season but they have struggled to produce consistent form in recent games to leave them under serious pressure.
Back to back defeats by Brighton and Tottenham have heaped the pressure on Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.
Manchester United were thought to be on the lookout for a number of new defenders this summer but the Red Devils ended up not bringing in any centre-halves before the deadline.
And Merson has admitted that the Red Devils’ failure to bring in a new defender already appears to be costing them.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “You don’t see Manchester United being beaten 3-0 at home, you just don’t.
“I’m not going to sit here and tell Jose Mourinho how to be the manager of a football club.
“Whatever happens, he’s a better manager than me, but I think he needed to be backed, he didn’t get backed, and if you look they’re letting in goals left, right and centre.
“When have Manchester United let in three in one game and then three in another? They only let in 15 in his first season at Chelsea! He said he needed centre-halves, they didn’t and now it’s biting them on the backside.”
Manchester United will aim to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they travel to Burnley on Sunday afternoon.
