Unai Emery will demand a lot more from Mesut Ozil at Arsenal moving forwards, according to Alan Smith.
The German playmaker’s situation at Arsenal has been a source of debate in recent days after he missed the Gunners’ clash with West Ham United last weekend.
There had been reports of a bust-up between Emery and Ozil at Arsenal’s training ground before the game, but the new Gunners boss insisted that his absence from the squad was due to illness after the game.
Ozil will be hoping to establish himself as one of the main fixtures in the Arsenal team this season under Emery as the Gunners look to try and challenge for a top-four finish.
And former Arsenal star Smith seems to feel that there is clearly a difficult situation brewing under Emery between the pair.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Smith said: “Only three weeks in and it feels like Mesut Ozil’s name keeps cropping up.
“But it’s impossible to avoid the situation developing at Arsenal between the German and Unai Emery. Whether Ozil was poorly or not going into the game against West Ham, it’s clear his new manager wants a lot more.
“The big question is: can the boss change the style of a player possibly set in his ways? Ozil will be 30 in October.
“Maybe the playmaker looks at his list of trophies and wonders why he should now start tearing about, closing down opponents at speed in the manner preferred by his new boss.”
Arsenal will return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon when they take on Cardiff City away from home.
The north London side ended last season in sixth place and without a trophy before Arsene Wenger opted to step down at the end of the campaign.
