Paul Merson insists Antonio Conte could still remain as Chelsea FC manager beyond the 2017-18 season.

The Italian head coach has faced relentless speculation surrounding his future this season amid reports of a falling out with the Chelsea FC board over their transfer policy.

Conte had an incredible impact on Chelsea FC and the Premier League following his appointment as Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor in 2016.

The Chelsea FC manager led the Blues to the Premier League title after the west London outfit finished seven points ahead of bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues only missed out on double glory after Chelsea FC lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Chelsea FC have struggled in the current campaign and are in fifth place in the Premier League table to cast doubt on their prospects of securing a spot in the Chamions league next term.

The Blues lost 4-1 to FC Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 as well as a 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the League Cup final.

Conte’s position has been under threat following speculation linking Thomas Tuchel and Massimiliano Allegri with the role.

However, Arsenal legend Merson believes Conte could still be at Chelsea FC next summer.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he was still manager,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I think both manager and club are digging his heels in. He is still a great manager.”
