Liverpool FC and Arsenal flying the flag for England in Europe

Liverpool FC and Arsenal will bid to keep their hopes of European success alive this week as they play the first leg of their respective semi-final ties.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been drawn against Roma in the last four of the Champions League, while the Gunners will face Atletico Madrid in the Europa League.

Read on as we preview both ties.

Liverpool FC vs Roma – Champions League

A 5-1 aggregate victory over Manchester City in the quarter-finals had Liverpool fans dreaming of European glory, but they would be well advised not to underestimate the threat posed by Roma.

The Serie A side were beaten 4-1 by Barcelona in the first leg of their quarter-final tie, but they battled back in the return game to win 3-0 and progress to the last four on away goals.

Klopp’s side will play the first leg at Anfield on April 24, before heading to Rome’s Olympic Stadium for the return fixture on May 2.

The Reds are priced at 8/15 with bet365 to win the first game, with Roma available at 11/2 and the draw on offer at 7/2.

Liverpool FC’s overall record against Italian clubs is a worry, with the Premier League club winning just nine of their previous 25 meetings. However, in two-legged knockout ties they have won four and lost two.

Roma finished top of their group above Chelsea and Atletico Madrid in the first stage of the competition and their subsequent victories over Shakhtar Donetsk and Barca will give them confidence that they can defeat Liverpool FC.

The winners of the tie will face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the final in Kiev on May 26.

Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid – Europa League

Arsenal will hope to give outgoing manager Arsene Wenger the perfect send-off with success in this season’s Europa League.

The Gunners face tournament favourites Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals and the Spanish side will undoubtedly be a tough nut to crack over the two games.

The first leg takes place on April 26 at the Emirates Stadium, with the return match at Atletico’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium the following Thursday.

After finishing top of Group H in the first stage with 13 points from their six matches, Arsenal have defeated FK Ostersunds, AC Milan and CSKA Moscow to reach the last four.

Atletico entered the Europa League at the round of 32 having finished third in their Champions League group behind Roma and Chelsea.

Victories over FC Copenhagen, Lokomotiv Moscow and Sporting Lisbon helped Atletico book their place in the semi-finals.

The winners of the tie will face either Marseille or Red Bull Salzburg in the final in Lyon on May 16.
