Jose Mourinho has insisted that he is desperate for his Manchester United team to finish above Liverpool FC in the Premier League table this season.
The Red Devils are currently in second place in the Premier League table as they look to try and finish as runners-up to newly crowned champions Manchester City.
Manchester United have been in much improved form in the Premier League this term after having struggled to produce consistent performances in the top flight under Mourinho last term.
They finished in sixth place in the table last term and won both the Europa League and League Cup in Mourinho’s first season at the club.
Liverpool FC are currently in third place as they look to try and catch Manchester United in second spot before the season is out.
However, the Reds will clearly be focusing their attentions on their forthcoming Champions League semi-final showdowns with AS Roma.
And Mourinho has insisted that he is desperate for his team to finish second and above the likes of Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC.
Speaking at his news conference after Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-finals, Mourinho said: “The season is successful if we finish second, if we do a better Premier League [season] than Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.
“If we do that, I think it is successful because 81 points would break the 80 points target.
“To finish second against an untouchable winner is good, to make lots more points than last season, to win more matches, to score more goals, to concede less goals, to have much better results against the top teams I think is a successful season.
“Now the [FA Cup] final is the final and obviously you have to try to win, but I do not think it is because of one game that a team is good or bad, a player is good or bad, a manager is good or bad and the season is good or bad.”
Manchester United will take on Arsenal in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday.
