Chris Sutton has named Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool FC’s key player ahead of their Champions League quarter-final clash against Manchester City on Wednesday night.
The Reds booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals thanks to a 5-0 win against Portuguese giants FC Porto in the previous round following Sadio Mane’s hat-trick in the first leg.
Liverpool FC haven’t conceded a goal in the Champions League since Van Dijk’s addition after the Reds signed the Netherlands international in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in January.
The Netherlands international sat out Liverpool FC’s 4-3 win against Manchester City in the Premier League back in February as the Reds ended their leaders’ unbeaten run in the top flight.
However, Van Dijk has helped Liverpool FC to keep six clean sheets in thier last 10 games, conceding a six goals.
Former Chelsea FC striker Sutton explained why Van Dijk holds the key to Liverpool FC’s chances of reaching the Champions League semi-finals.
“The big player for Liverpool is Van Dijk,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“This is the time when you need your star signing. Your key defender. They need him to turn up. This has to be Van Dijk’s night.”
Liverpool FC made Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world following his January move.
