Rio Ferdinand has insisted that he was not surprised by Arsenal’s disappointing performance in their 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the Premier League at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners defended solidly in the first half at Wembley as they managed to keep the score at 0-0 heading into the break.
However, they were largely outplayed in the second half and it was Harry Kane who gave the home side the lead in the 49th minute with a brilliant header.
Arsenal struggled to find their feet in the second half and never really threatened Hugo Lloris’ goal.
The Gunners ended up not being able to conjure an equaliser as they slumped to a damaging defeat.
But former Manchester United defender Ferdinand insists that he was not at all surprised by Arsenal’s display in the second half.
Speaking to BT Sport, former England star Ferdinand said: “Concentration, we mentioned at half-time. Discipline, we mentioned at half-time. When they came out they had neither of those.
“But am I surprised? This is what I’ve come to expect of Arsenal. They proved me right again.
“They don’t produce, they don’t come up with the goods. It was a huge game, the chance to get within touching distance of Spurs – and they disappoint.”
The result dealt a severe blow to Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League via a top-four finish this season.
The Gunners are now seven points behind their bitter local rivals in the Premier League table.
Arsenal’s best hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League will probably be via winning the Europa League this term.
