Mark Lawrenson isn’t getting carried away with Mesut Ozil’s recent performances despite his role in Arsenal’s 5-1 win against Everton last weekend.
The Germany international has been inconsistent since speculation began about his long-term future at the north London club over 12 months ago.
Ozil was linked with a potential move to Arsenal’s bitter rivals Manchester United in the January transfer window but a deal failed to materialise.
Indeed, the 29-year-old signed a long-term contract with the Gunners to make him the best-paid player in Arsenal’s history.
Ozil teamed up with January signings Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the first time on Saturday evening.
The Gunners playmaker produced a mesmerising performance in Arsenal’s 5-1 win against Everton in the Premier League last weekend.
Former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson warned that Ozil has flattered to deceive too many times in the past.
“We have to wait with Ozil,” Lawrenson told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“He has done this on many occasions before and then he lets himself down – and us down.”
Ozil moved to Arsenal in a £42.5m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2013 summer transfer window.
The German star has won three FA Cup titles in the past four seasons but haven’t come close to winning the title.
Ozil has scored four goals and has made seven assists in 23 games in the Premier League this season.
