Liverpool FC need to make as many as five new signings in the summer if they want to challenge for the title next season, according to journalist Duncan Castles.
The Reds have already been busy in the January Transfer window and have wrapped up a deal to land Virgil van Dijk from Southampton to bolster their defence.
The Merseyside outfit also agreed to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona earlier in the month as they were reported to have brought in a transfer fee of as much as £145m for the Brazilian.
Liverpool FC are still being linked with a number of players as the January transfer deadline draws ever nearer.
And Castles feels that the Reds are still in need of some significant reinforcements in key areas if they are to challenge for the top honours next season and beyond.
Speaking on the Transfer Window podcast, Castles said: “There’s still a lot more work to be done on that squad.
“They still don’t have reliable first-choice goalkeeper, if Van Dijk works for them they’ve got one good centre-back, they don’t have a top quality right-back, they’ve got a problem with Emre Can, they’ve got to convince him to stay.
“And you could argue in the best world they would want an increase on Emre Can anyway.
“The rest of their midfield isn’t brilliant. It’s the attack that is the redeeming factor.
“I think they are still quite short of numbers there which is why you can see them looking for someone like Luan, Lemar to add and give them the ability to rotate more which something Klopp has learned this season.
“In his first two seasons at Liverpool he had serious problems with January and the results fell off a cliff because of the way he was training the players, and because he was working them too hard on the field.
“He’s managed to rotate his squad this season and keep the results going through this winter period.
“I think they also need another centre-forward alongside Roberto Firmino, as good a player as he is there are a lot of games where they are not converting enough of the chances they are creating.
“I think the Swansea game it was 23 shots they had, and that’s quite typical of Liverpool matches in that they produce a lot of shots on goal but drop points to teams they are expected to beat. So that has to change.”
Liverpool FC are looking to return to winning ways when they travel to Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
The Reds were dumped out of the FA Cup in disappointing fashion on Saturday night when they slumped to a 3-2 loss to West Brom in front of their home fans at Anfield.
