Dennis Wise challenges new Chelsea FC signing to become next Frank Lampard

Dennis Wise has challenged Ross Barkley to emulate Frank Lampard at Chelsea FC.

The Blues signed the England international in a £15m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the January transfer window.

Barkley is a talented player but the 23-year-old hasn’t realised his potential at the Merseyside outfit over the past few seasons.

The Chelsea signing scored 12 times in 48 games in the 2015-16 season in his best campaign in a Red shirt so far.

Barkley is a goal-scoring midfielder but has produced relatively modest figures throughout his Everton career.

In comparison, Lampard finished as Chelsea’s record goal-scorer after netting 211 times in 648 games in all competitions.

Former Chelsea midfielder Wise believes Barkley will have to rise to challenge of emulating Lampard as a goal-scoring midfielder.

“I am intrigued to see where he is going to play,” Wise told Sky Sports.

“The last player in centre midfield that scored goals was Frank Lampard. They have never been able to replace him.

“Is he going to play alongside Kante? Is he going to play on the wing? He has the talent to open things up.

“I hope they stick him alongside Kante to see how things go.”

Barkley made his Chelsea debut in a 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Blues finished top of the table last season to win the top-flight crown for the second time in three seasons.
