Cesar Azpilicueta has told Ross Barkley to be patient as he looks to hold down a regular spot in the Chelsea FC team this season.
The 24-year-old midfielder became the Blues’ first signing of the January transfer window earlier this month when he signed a long-term contract with the west London side after joining from Everton.
Barkley made his debut for his new club on Wednesday night when he came on as a substitute for Willian in the 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the League Cup at The Emirates.
It was the midfielder’s first appearance of the season after he missed the first half of the campaign due to a serious muscular injury.
Barkley will now look to get his head down and try to earn a regular spot in Antonio Conte’s team in the second half of the season.
But Spain international Azpilicueta has talked up the importance of having patience with Barkley as he gets used to his new surroundings at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking to Chelsea FC’s website, Azpilicueta said: “Patience is important with him.
“He is coming back from a seven-month injury and he is in a new club, but from what I have seen in training he is working very hard and trying to get into the team. We have to give him time because I am sure he will be very important.
“We know how he is as a player and a person, and in the next few weeks we have really important games and we need everyone at 120 per cent.”
Chelsea FC are currently preparing for their FA Cup fourth-round clash against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon. The Blues were beaten by Arsenal in last year’s final.
