Steve McLaren has urged Chelsea against trying to cash-in on David Luiz in the January transfer window amid suggestions that the defender could be a target for Arsenal.
The Brazilian’s future has been a source of speculation in recent weeks because he hasn’t featured for the west London side since the 4-0 win over Qarabag in the Champions League back on 22 November.
Luiz has been struggling with a knee injury but there has also been speculation suggesting that he has had a falling out with Blues boss Antonio Conte.
Reports in the British media have suggested that Luiz could be a target for Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal in the January transfer window.
However, former England manager McLaren isn’t sure that the defender would be a good fit for the Gunners and he instead encouraged the Blues to keep hold of the Brazil international.
Speaking to Sky Sports News on Tuesday morning, McLaren said: “It’s interesting [the link to Arsenal] because I think David Luiz last season for Chelsea was a talisman along with Diego Costa.
“He needs players around him, defenders around him, and I’m not too sure Arsenal have got the type of defenders that will get around him.
“It will be interesting but I think Chelsea will want to get him fit and playing.”
Chelsea are currently preparing for their FA Cup third round clash against Norwich City on Saturday evening.
The west London side were one of the busiest clubs in the Premier League in the summer transfer window as they signed six players, but it remains to be seen whether they will bring in any new faces this month.
