Lee Dixon reacts to Marcos Alonso’s display in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at Arsenal

Lee Dixon was critical of Arsenal’s defending despite praising Marcos Alonso for a “brilliant” goal after Chelsea drew 2-2 with their London rivals at The Emirates on Wednesday night.

The FA Cup holders made the breakthrough in the second half when England international Jack Wilshere broke the deadlock with an impressive goal following his surging run into the box before he fired past Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea were level less than 10 minutes later when Eden Hazard was brought down inside the area following Hector Bellerin’s clumsy challenge.

The Belgian forward made no mistake from the penalty spot to allow Chelsea to restore parity.

The defending Premier League champions continued to press for a winner, and while Alvaro Morata endured a wasteful evening, his compatriot Alonso made no mistake from six yards.

Davide Zappacosta picked out Alonso with a superb cross and the left-back scored his sixth goal of the Premier League season.

However, Arsenal’s Spanish full-back Hector Bellerin netted a dramatic equaliser in the second minute of added time to rescue a 2-2 draw for the hosts.

“It was full bak to full back. Zappacosta gets it,” Dixon told NBC SN.

“Sometimes you can’t stop the cross. Sometimes you get beat. Fill the gaps. Don’t let anyone run in front of you like that.

“As a defender it’s a really bad error. Mustafi has too look over his shpuilder and see the player coming. He doesn’t see Alonso.

“It’s a brilliant finish with his right foot.”

Chelsea remained in third place and one point behind Manchester United following their stalemate. The Blues are seven points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal, on the other hand, are five points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the hunt to secure a Champions League spot.
