Lee Dixon praised Hector Bellerin for his last-gasp equaliser to rescue a point in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea at The Emirates on Wednesday night.
The Gunners edged into a second half lead after Alvaro Morata had missed two guilt edge chances when Jack Wilshere surged into the penalty area and finish emphatically past Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
However, Bellerin’s rash challenge on Eden Hazard saw the Belgian forward tumble to the turf and win the defending Premier League champions a second-half penalty at the Emirates Stadium.
Hazard dispatched his spot-kick to equalise before Marcos Alonso appeared to have scored a late winner for the visitors when the Spanish left-back got on the end of Davide Zappacosta’s cross.
Bellerin made amends for his poor defending earlier in the second half when the Barcelona target fired an instinctive half volley past Courtois in the second minute of added time at The Emirates.
Former Arsenal defender Dixon was critical of Bellerin’s role in Hazard’s penalty:
“If you are going to stick the foot in, you have to win the ball. He bamboozled Bellerin.
“Bellerin kicks the bottom of his foot. There is contact. He goes down really early. If Bellerin misses the ball and kicks his foot, you say its a foul, Does he get that outside the box, probably.”
However, Dixon praised Bellerin for his brilliant equaliser with an instinctive volley.
“I’ve seen it all now. What a shot this is. He guides it into the top corner,” Dixon told NBC SN.
“It was a little half volley. He almost passes it into the far corner. It is brilliant technique from the full back.”
Chelsea remained in third place and one point behind Manchester United following their stalemate. The Blues are seven points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
Arsenal, on the other hand, are five points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the hunt to secure a Champions League spot.
