Steve McClaren believes Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini would be the “perfect fit” for Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.
The defending Premier League champions have been linked with a move to sign the 33-year-old since Conte took over the reins at Stamford Bridge in 2016.
Chiellini has entered the final six months of his current Juventus deal to throw up the possibility of the experienced defender leaving Turin at the end of the 2017-18 season.
The towering defender has worked with Chelsea boss Conte during the manager’s spell in charge of the Serie A champions Juventus and the Italian national team.
Chelsea allowed John Terry to leave the west London side in the summer to move to Championship outfit Aston Villa following a decorated spell at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues signed AS Roma defender Antonio Rudiger in a £34m deal in the summer, while Andreas Christensen has established himself a first-team regular since his return from the Bundesliga.
But former Newcastle manager McClaren believes Chiellini would be an incredible addition Conte’s Chelsea team if the Blues could land the Experienced Italian centre-half.
“He’s the perfect fit for Chelsea and the perfect fit for Conte,” McClaren told Sky Sports News on Tuesday. “That would be a great signing for the second half of this season.
“It’s something I think which Chelsea have lacked [a leader]. Gary Cahill is not a leader, he’s a very good player.
“Antonio Rudiger has come in and tried to adapt to the Premier League and I think they’ve had problems in that area. Chiellini – wow, what a signing that would be, not just on the field but also off the field in terms of leadership, which every team needs.”
Chelsea will make the short trip across the English capital to take on bitter rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.
