Paul Merson believes Manchester United could miss out on a place in the Premier League’s top four.
The Red Devils ended a four-game winless run in all competitions on New Year’s Day thanks to a 2-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park.
Manchester United finished 2017 with three successive draws against Burnley, Leicester City and Southampton to lose ground on runaway leaders Manchester City.
The 20-time English champions are in second place in the table but could fall behind Chelsea if Antonio Conte’s men manage to beat Arsenal at The Emirates.
Manchester United haven’t finished in the top four in the last two seasons under Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho but qualified for this season’s Champions League after winning the Europa League last term.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes the Red Devils could struggle to secure a top-four place under pressure from Chelsea, Liverpool FC, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
“It’s an interesting one, because I actually don’t think Man Utd are a shoo-in for top four,” Merson told Sky Sports.
Manchester United signed three players in the summer transfer window to improve their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League.
The Red Devils recruited Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.
The 20-time English champions won the League Cup and the Europa League last term.
