Charlie Nicholas believes Arsenal should forget about signing Steven N’Zonzi and look to sign Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.
The Gunners have been linked with a move to sign a defensive midfielder in the Janaury transfer window to strengthen a real weak area in the Arsenal squad.
The former Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers midfielder N’Zonzi has been linked with a potential move to Arsenal over the past few months.
N’Zonzi has established himself as a solid La Liga star during his successful spell at Sevilla but the Frenchman is now being linked with a return to the Premier League.
However, former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas believes Doucoure would be a better option than N’Zonzi to improve Arsene Wenger’s midfield options.
“It has been so poor defensively for four, five seasons and a defensive-minded midfielder would really help us out,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“I don’t bring Steven N’Zonzi into that party, I’d be more interested in somebody like Abdoulaye Doucouré, who could play a deeper role quite nicely for us.”
Doucoure has scored six times in 20 games in the Premier League in the 2017-18 season under Marco Silva.
The Gunners have been relying on Jack Wilshere and Granit Xhaka in midfield during the festive schedule.
Arsenal ended 2017 in fifth place in the Premier League table following a 1-1 draw with West Brom at The Hawthorns on New Year’s Eve.
The north London side missed out on a Champions League spot last term following a fifth-placed finish last term.
