Phil Thompson believes Antonio Conte needs to strengthen his Chelsea squad in the January transfer window.
The defending Premier League champions are in third place in the Premier League table but can hoist themselves up to second place if Chelsea beat bitter rivals Arsenal at The Emirates on Wednesday night.
Conte’s side have been in good form over the past few months of the season to hoist themselves into the top four but are still someway off Premier League leaders Manchester City in the title race.
Chelsea have relied heavily on a core of players in the 2017-18 season so far despite adding six players to their squad in the summer transfer window after winning the Premier League title.
The Blues allowed some key individuals to leave in the summer to weaken their spine following John Terry’s move to Aston Villa and Nemanja Matic’s surprise switch to Manchester United.
Diego Costa completed a loan move to Atletico Madrid in September with view to a permanent transfer at the end of the current campaign.
Former Liverpool FC defender Thompson believes Chelsea need to make signings in all positions to improve their squad ahead of their Champions League last-16 clash against Barcelona.
“They’re a fine team but I think if you scratch beneath that main 11 there’s not a lot there to come through,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“Antonio Conte needs strengthening in all areas of his team, with David Luiz out of favour.”
