Paul Scholes has told Luke Shaw that he must be able to take stick from manager Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
The England defender has made his way back into the first team at Old Trafford in recent weeks after having struggled to win over Mourinho at first this season.
The left-back made only his third Premier League start of the season on Saturday as Manchester United stuttered to a goalless draw with Southampton at Old Trafford in the top flight.
Mourinho has been publicly critical of Shaw in the past following his lack of game-time at Old Trafford in recent months.
However, Scholes believes that taking criticism from you manager should be part and parcel of being a top quality footballer.
Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday, Scholes said: “You have to be able to take a bit of stick from the manager.
“You’re at this big club for a reason – you’re a very good player and mentally you should be prepared for whatever’s coming your way.”
Manchester United are in FA Cup third round action when they host Derby County on Friday night.
It remains to be seen whether Mourinho will look to significantly strengthen his Manchester United squad now that the January transfer window is open.
The Red Devils will surely be bound to be linked with a host of players in the coming weeks as they look to try and close the gap to Manchester City.
