Paul Merson believes Chelsea are capable of finding a way past Barcelona in the Champions League last 16.
Chelsea managed to secure a 2-1 win against Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital thanks to goals from Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi in the Champions League clash.
The Blues drew with AS Roma and Atletico at Stamford Bridge but Antonio Conte’s men suffered a chastening 3-0 loss at the Stadio Olimpico on the Chelsea manager’s return to Italy.
Naturally, the west London side managed to beat Maribor home and away to secure six points but their second-placed finish resulted in a last-16 draw against Barcelona.
However, Chelsea have won five, drawn five and lost five of their meetings with Barcelona to give the west London side some confidence ahead of the knockout stage clash in February.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes the defending Premier League champions should feel confident about their prospects against Barcelona.
“Chelsea have been inconsistent at times this season but if they show the form they have in certain games they can beat Barcelona in the Champions League,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“If they play like they did against Roma they will be out of the tie before you know it. Chelsea just need consistency and they will be a threat to anybody.”
The Champions League rivals have met on five previous occasions in two-legged knockout ties in the Champions League, with Barcelona progressing three times and Chelsea twice.
