Jose Mourinho has insisted that Luke Shaw still has some work to do to earn a regular spot in the first team at Manchester United.
The 22-year-old made his first Premier League start of the season on Wednesday night as he helped the Red Devils record a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth at Old Trafford as they returned to winning ways in front of their home fans.
Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the game in the 25th minute as Manchester United responded to the disappointment of their derby defeat by Manchester City on Sunday.
Shaw, who played for 83 minutes on Wednesday, has been gradually working his way back to full fitness after having struggled to win over Mourinho since the Portuguese coach’s appointment back in May 2016.
However, Mourinho now seems to be ready to give the England international a more regular run in the first team as he made his second start of the season in all competitions.
Speaking to BBC Sport after the win, Mourinho said: “I’m not saying [Shaw is] first or second choice, he’s an option.
“His history is an incredible injury and more surgery at the end of last season.
“He needs competitive matches, we gave him that and he had some cramps so we had to change him.
“The standing ovation for him I liked, it helps the player.”
Manchester United will return to Premier League action on Sunday with a trip to West Bromwich Albion in the top flight.
Manchester City beat Swansea on Wednesday to keep their 11-point lead at the top of the table intact.
