Jurgen Klopp has warned his Liverpool FC squad that Porto are very strong opponents ahead of their Champions League last-16 clash in February.
The Reds secured their place in Monday’s knockout stage draw thanks to a resounding 7-0 win over Russian outfit Spartak Moscow in the final group game at Anfield.
Liverpool FC scored 23 goals in the group stage to finished ahead of La Liga outfit Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Maribor in what a straightforward group for the Reds.
Porto finished in second place behind Turkish side Besiktas but ahead of Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig to secure their place in the Champions League last-16 draw.
Liverpool FC scored more goals than any other Premier League team in the group stage in the Champions League’s history.
However, Klopp isn’t underestimating Porto ahead of their first leg clash on 14 February before the Portuguese side travel to Anfield for the return fixture on 6 March.
“It’s just good that we now know it,” Klopp told Liverpool FC’s website.
“Last Wednesday, when we knew we were still involved, that was our big dream: we didn’t care who we would get. It was clear it would be a strong side. Porto are a strong side, first in the Portuguese league and always good.
“This year again they’re a difficult side to play. They came through in a difficult group; they kept Leipzig – a really good side in Germany – behind them. It will be interesting. It’s good that we have the first game at Porto, the weather is better there in February! Then in March we meet them at Anfield. We are really looking forward to it.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to secure a return to the Champions League.
The Reds won the Champions League in 2005 under Rafael Benitez in dramatic circumstances just 12 months after Jose Mourinho led Porto to glory in Europe’s premier club competition.
