Phil Neville has praised Liverpool FC defender Joe Gomez for his performance against the world’s most-expensive player at Wembley last week.
The England international made his first start in almost 24 months back in August when he helped Liverpool FC to edge to a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace at Anfield.
Gomez has made one assist in nine appearances in the Premier League this term as he continues to deputise for Nathaniel Clyne at right-back.
The 20-year-old is also competent in the centre of defence and Gomez has established himself as a regular in Klopp’s Liverpool FC team.
England boss Gareth Southgate handed Gomez his debut in a goalless draw with Germany before he managed to keep Neymar quiet in 0-0 stalemate with Brazil on Tuesday night.
Former Manchester United defender Neville lavished praise on Gomez for his composed performance in the England defence despite coming up against the most-expensive player in the world.
“He was the best player. He played on Neymar’s side,” Neville told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“He controlled him really well. He read the game really well. He was outstanding. He put his marker down to be in the squad for Russia.
“It was like an old head on young shoulders. As an England supporter, we’ve found a really good player.”
Gomez moved to Liverpool FC in a £5m deal from Charlton Athletic during Rodgers’ spell in charge at Anfield.
The 20-year-old suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2015 weeks after Klopp’s appointment as manager.
