Antonio Conte admits Chelsea youngster has surprised him

Antonio Conte has admitted that he has been impressed by Andreas Christensen’s “maturity” at Chelsea this season.

The Danish defender was thrown straight into the starting line-up for the Blues when they took on Manchester United before the international break, and he impressed as the west London side secured a 1-0 victory.

Christensen also helped Denmark to book their place in next summer’s World Cup in Russia by beating the Republic of Ireland in their play-off clashes this month.

The 21-year-old replaced David Luiz in the Chelsea team against Manchester United after Conte opted to drop the Brazilian defender for the clash against the Red Devils.

And Conte has admitted that he has been pleasantly surprised by what he has seen from Christensen so far this season, and is expecting more to come from the young defender.

Speaking at a news conference before Chelsea’s clash with West Brom on Saturday, Conte said: “For sure, every game I must try to make the best decision for the team.

“Christensen played a really good game against Man United, in a big game, and he is showing great maturity.

“I am happy to have this type of problem also because there are a lot of fixtures from now until the end of December.”

Chelsea return to Champions League action on Wednesday night when they take on Qarabag.

The Blues, who won the Premier League title under Conte last season, are looking to get back to winning ways in Europe’s elite club competition after their 3-0 loss to Roma in Italy earlier this month.
