Martin Keown: Man United signing not at Didier Drogba level (yet)

Martin Keown believes Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku still has work to do to reach Didier Drogba’s level.

The Red Devils signed Lukaku in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old had the chance to return to defending champions Chelsea in the summer but Lukaku opted to move to Old Trafford.

Lukaku has already scored seven times in eight games in the Premier League to make a brilliant start to his Red Devils career.

However, the Belgian forward failed to get on the score sheet in Manchester United’s goalless draw with bitter rivals Liverpool last weekend.

Indeed, Lukaku failed to make an impression at Anfield to prompt criticism of his record against the top-six teams in the Premier League.

Former Arsenal defender Keown Believes Manchester United striker Lukaku is still improving as a striker despite comparisons with Chelsea legend Drogba.

“Lukaku is criticised because people rate him really highly and see that he can do much more than he is at times prepared to give,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“Didier Drogba was one of the best lone strikers in Premier League history but I do not think Lukaku is quite at that level yet.

“When Manchester United are being dogged — as they were at Anfield — they need to see more from Lukaku.”

Drogba had a great record against Liverpool during his spell at Chelsea.

Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last season to attract interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.

Manchester United also signed Benfica defender Victor Lindelof and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic in the summer transfer window.
