Martin Keown: Chelsea signing looks like ‘passenger’ in Antonio Conte’s team

Martin Keown has claimed summer signing Tiemoue Bakayoko has looked like a passenger in the Chelsea team over the past couple of weeks.

Chelsea signed Bakayoko in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco in the summer transfer window to bolster their midfield options.

Bakayoko’s arrival prompted the defending Premier League champions to make the somewhat bizarre decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Chelsea in a £40m deal.

The France international missed the start of the season due to injury before the defensive midfielder impressed in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

Bakayoko scored his first Premier League goal in Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to basement club Crystal Palace last weekend as the Blues lost successive top-flight games.

Former Arsenal defender Keown hasn’t been impressed with Bakayoko’s performances in recent weeks ahead of Chelsea’s home clash against Watford at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

“In some games, Tiemoue Bakayoko has almost been a passenger,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“Chelsea are crying out for a De Bruyne or Silva who will dominate play.”

Chelsea signed Bakayoko as one of six additions in the summer transfer window to overhaul their squad ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.

The Blues have won the title in two of the past three seasons under Jose Mourinho and then Conte.

The west London side are nine points behind leaders Manchester City in the title race.
