Arsene Wenger has admitted that he wanted to bring Kylian Mbappe to Arsenal from Monaco this summer, before the teenager ended up signing for Paris Saint-Germain.
Arsenal were linked with a host of players during the summer transfer window but only ended up concluding deals for two new faces – Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette.
Wenger has made no secret of his admiration for Mbappe and the Arsenal boss has previously admitted that he would have liked to bring him to The Emirates.
However, Mbappe ended up signing for Paris Saint-Germain on loan in a deal which will become permanent next summer.
Wenger was quizzed about Mbappe on French television over the weekend and the Arsenal boss admitted that he is a huge fan of the teenage talent.
Wenger told Telefoot: “Mbappe could be [the next] Pele,” he said. “There are no limits to how far he can go.
“I wanted him too, but €180m is too much for us.”
Arsenal return to Premier League action after the international break when they host Bournemouth at The Emirates on Saturday.
The Gunners have made a poor start to the Premier League season, after having lost two of their opening three games to leave them 16th in the table.
The north London side, who finished fifth and won the FA Cup last term, have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
