Arsene Wenger insists he respects Thomas Lemar’s decision to turn down a move to Arsenal.
The Gunners made a last-ditch bid to sign the 21-year-old in a club-record £92m deal from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco.
The French side accepted the north London side’s mammoth offer but Lemar rejected the proposed move to the Emirates Stadium.
According to reports in France, Lemar has his heart set on a move to Liverpool despite remaining at the Ligue 1 side beyond Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Lemar’s decision to reject Arsenal meant that Alexis Sanchez’s £60m switch to their Premier League title rivals Manchester City.
Speaking to beIN Sport about Lemar’s rebuttal of Arsenal, Wenger refused to criticise the France international.
“Lemar chose to stay at Monaco,” Wenger told beIN Sports.
“You have to respect what happens on the negotiation side. I know we live in an era of transparency but at some stage, to respect everybody, you have to not talk too much about that.”
Arsenal have endured a tough start to the new Premier League season following successive defeats on the road.
The Gunners lost 1-0 to Stoke City last month following Jese Rodriguez’s second-half winner at the bet365 Stadium.
Arsenal suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss to Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield last weekend to raise questions about their ability to challenge for the title this season.
The north London side have signed Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette and Schalke 04 defender Sead Kolasinac in the summer transfer window.
