Emmanuel Petit believes that Arsenal should cut their losses over Mesut Ozil and try and sell the Germany playmaker.
The 28-year-old has come under fire for his performances in the Gunners’ opening games of the Premier League season in what has been a difficult few weeks for the north London side.
Ozil attracted plenty of criticism after he and his team-mates were thoroughly outplayed by Liverpool in their humiliating 4-0 loss to the Reds at Anfield on Sunday.
The Germany international was also singled out as a culprit as Arsenal lost 1-0 to Stoke City in their second Premier League game of the season.
And former Arsenal star Petit believes that it is time for Arsenal to get rid of Ozil, indicating that they should try and sell him in the January transfer window.
Petit is quoted as saying by SFR Sport: “It’s been a while since he played a good game, and even longer since he put a string of good performances together.
“He’s still able to put in one good performance, but good performances over three, four, five weeks… I don’t think we’ll see Ozil at that level again.
“What disappoints me most is his attitude, his defeatist attitude on the pitch, his nonchalance that transmits to his team-mates.
“Arsene keeps him on the pitch. If I were the coach, I’d say, ‘Mesut, you want to leave? There’s the door. Be sure to close it on the way out.’ If I were Arsene Wenger, I’d say, ‘Get out.'”
Arsenal, who finished fifth in the top flight table last term, will look to return to winning ways when they host Bournemouth at The Emirates in their next Premier League game on Saturday 9 September.
Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid back in the summer of 2013 and has won three FA Cup titles since signing for the north London side.
