Insider backs Chelsea to make 24-year-old striker their first summer signing

Chelsea will sign Romelu Lukaku from Everton in the summer transfer window, according to David Amoyal.

The Belgium international has been heavily linked with a return to Stamford Bridge less than three seasons after Chelsea sold the striker to Everton.

Jose Mourinho was unable to guarantee Lukaku regular first-team football which led to his £27m move to the Merseyside outfit in 2014.

Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last season to finish behind Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in the race to secure the Premier League’s golden boot.

Writing in his column for ESPN FC, Serie A expert Amoyal predicted that Lukaku would complete a switch to Chelsea this summer after the Blues missed out on the striker last summer.

“With Diego Costa’s status up in the air and United the clear favourites in the race for Morata, Chelsea are expected to bring the Belgian striker back to Stamford Bridge,” Amoyal said.

“Lukaku was close to joining manager Antonio Conte’s squad last summer, but Everton turned down their offer at the last second.

“This time, however, the deal feels almost inevitable after the striker publicly acknowledged he has an agreement with Everton and he knows which direction his career will take.”

Chelsea finished seven points behind Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League title race last season.

The Blues missed out on FA Cup glory after a 2-1 loss to bitter rivals Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Lukaku was part of the Everton team that conceded eight times against Chelsea last term in two heavy defeats at Stamford Bridge and Goodison Park.
