The five top pre workout supplements

Finding the best pre workout supplement can be difficult, especially because there are so many products available these days.

A simple internet search for the top Pre Workout supplements returns millions of results. How are we supposed to compare the best products to find the one for us?

Well luckily for you, we’ve done all of the hard work for you. Here, you’ll find everything you need to know about the leading pre Workout supplements in 2017.

We’ve also taken the time to detail exactly what you should look for when picking your supplement, so you can get the most out of every gym session.

What to look for in a good pre workout supplement

The first thing to remember whenever you find yourself considering any fitness supplements is that the clue is in the name. A supplement is supposed to do just that – be a supplement to your success and help you on the road to achieving your fitness goals. As with most things in life, there’s no shortcut to success and you probably won’t be able to achieve the results you’re after unless you put in the hard work required.

That being said, picking the right pre workout supplement can give you a huge edge in your training and help accelerate your success.

We’ve trawled through a host of online articles and journal papers to reveal some of the best ingredients for a pre workout supplement. These include:

Citrulline Malate
Beta Alanine
Rhodiola Rosea
Creatine Monohydrate

Of course, there are lots of other ingredients which can be beneficial but if the pre workout supplement you’re considering contains some of the above, you can be pretty sure that it has been created on the back of the latest research and studies.

When looking for a good pre workout supplement, we also prefer to steer clear of artificial flavourings and sweeteners.

Why use a pre workout supplement?

Have you ever had a workout where you feel like you are just going through the motions but your head is just not in the game?

You’re going through the motions but you’re just not in the game.

Physically you’re there but mentally, well, you’re just not. It happens to everyone, but you can kiss goodbye to those struggles by using the right pre workout.

We all remember our amazing workouts. Those days when you just don’t want to leave and you feel like you could lift more for longer. Sessions like that can become the norm for you if you pick the right pre workout.

A good pre workout supplement will give you:

Explosive power in the gym – You’ll be able to lift more weights and build more muscle

Better stamina – You’ll be able to enjoy longer training sessions without a dip in energy levels

Increased mental focus – Concentrate on your workouts with laser focus and with 100% dedication

Let’s face it, we’ve all had ‘off-days’ in the gym but picking the right pre workout can be key to your success. So, what are some of the best pre workouts available today?

The top 5 pre workout supplements

We’ve sampled some of the most popular pre workout supplements on the market today and have read through customer reviews of each product. Here’s our pick of the top five products available right now:

1) 4 Gauge

We’ve picked this as our top product despite it only having been launched in 2017 because it contains the most amount of the best ingredients and has very good customer reviews.

4 gauge pre workout

The first thing you’ll notice about 4 Gauge is the cool branding. It’s the latest product from UK-based manufacturer Roar Ambition, whose Instant Knockout and Testofuel products are both incredibly popular.

The official website says that it delivers the most effective, explosive and focused workout experience possible, which is music to our ears. The product was developed and tested alongside fitness professionals and contains only the best natural ingredients. Put simply, it’s designed to keep you ‘in the zone’ and enjoy killer workouts every time.

4 Gauge contains some of the best possible natural ingredients for a pre-workout in great doses.

Citrulline Malate helps to deliver “kick-ass” muscle pumps and can also increase growth hormone after a workout. This is great because it can increase blood flow, reduce soreness and help you build more muscle. The Caffeine and L-Theanine both work together to give you the stamina you need for muscle-shredding workouts.

The Caffeine works to increase your energy levels and stamina, while the amino acid L-Theanine helps to keep it all in check. We also love the fact that 4 Gauge contains Creatine Monohydrate to help boost your performance.

4 Gauge also tastes great and contains just 5 calories per serving. It’s currently only available in the special ‘Fruit Blast’ flavour and we loved it – it’s sweet and slightly sour. We genuinely looked forward to taking it on our way to the gym and we love that there are no artificial sweeteners (which is rare for a pre workout).

Any negatives?

At the time of writing, you can only buy it from the official website, and it’s premium-priced so may not suit everyone’s budget.

We’re big fans of 4 Gauge. Despite it being a new product, it contains the perfect amounts of all of the latest research-backed natural ingredients to help you get the very best from your workouts. This is the perfect product for anyone looking to take their workouts to the next level.

2) Slender pre workout blend

Next on our list is Protein World’s pre workout offering – The Slender pre workout blend. The UK-based company hit the headlines in 2015 following their controversial ‘Are you beach body ready?’ advertising campaign but we’re generally big fans of their products.

The Slender pre workout blend contains healthy doses of Citrulline Malate and Caffeine to help improve your workout game. We also like the fact that they’ve included iBCAA (branched chain amino acids) to help prevent muscle breakdown during your workouts. It also contains L-Tyrosine, an amino acid which helps to produce noradrenaline and dopamine to reduce stress levels.

It’s currently only available in a ‘Summer Fruits’ flavour but it mixed well with water and tasted very good.

Any negatives?

It’s only available online and contains the artificial sweetener Sucralose.

This is a good product from Protein World and this pre workout is generally very well reviewed online. This would be a good choice if you’re looking for a good-tasting pre workout supplement and don’t mind that it contains Sucralose.

3) Complete Pre-Workout

Next up is Bulk Powders’ Complete Pre-Workout product.

pre workout bulk powders

If you’re a regular reader of our fitness product reviews, you’ll know that we’re big fans of Bulk Powders’ affordable products.

It contains good doses of BCAAs and the website says it helps to increase high-intensity physical performance to give you the boost you need in your workouts. Interestingly, this product is Caffeine-free and does not contain many of the stimulants in most of the products on the market.

Like most of the pre workouts available today, Complete Pre-Workout also contains a healthy dose of Citrulline Malate and Beta Alanine to help you achieve maximum performance.

This product is currently available in Watermelon and Lemon & Lime flavours.

Any negatives?

It contains the artificial sweetener Sucralose and doesn’t mix quite as well as the two products above.

If you’re looking for a Caffeine-free pre workout then this could be the supplement for you. It’s got great reviews and is made by a reputable UK-based company.

For more information and to buy:

4) Mypre pre workout

The next product on our list is MyProtein’s Mypre.

The website says that it has been designed specifically for anyone looking for an “explosive” boost of energy during their workouts.

It contains Caffeine and Creatine to help boost your performance during training and is also packed with a good serving of BCAAs to help with muscle repair and prevent further muscle breakdown.

We also love the fact that Mypre is available in a selection of seven different flavours, including Sour Apple, Lemon and Lime, Watermelon, Raspberry Lemonade, Orange, Grape and Blue Raspberry.

Any negatives?

It contains the artificial sweetener Sucralose and is only available in a 500g tub.

This is another good product if you’re looking to try a pre workout. It’s great to have such a wide choice of flavours and MyProtein is a reputable brand from the UK.

For more information and to buy:

5) Adapt Nutrition Pre Train

The final pre workout product on our list is Adapt Nutrition’s Pre Train.

adapt pre train

The website says that it’s been specifically designed to give you the “edge” during your sessions at the gym.

Pre Train contains some of the best ingredients for a pre workout supplement, including Caffeine, Beta Alanine, Citrulline Malate, Taurine, Vitamin B6 and Arginine.

It’s currently available in both a Blue Raspberry and Apple flavour and mixes very well with water. It really tasted great.

Any negatives?

We like this product a lot but once again it contains the artificial sweetener Sucralose.

Adapt Nutrition are a reputable health and fitness company and their Pre Train product is definitely worth a go. The only downside is the use of an artificial sweetener. It currently costs around $35/ £28 for a 300g tub.

Wrapping things up – our final thoughts

So there you have it, our picks for the top pre workout supplements on the market today.

Our favourite product by far is 4 Gauge because it contains the best ingredients and is free from artificial sweeteners. It stands out as the top choice for a pre workout but you won’t go wrong with any of the four products selected above.

Just remember that you can’t expect a pre workout supplement to do all of the work for you. There’s no substitute to putting in the hard work in the gym. But picking the right product to supplement your success can be a massive boost.
