Pundit: This was David Luiz’s problem at Chelsea, Antonio Conte fixed it

Glenn Hoddle believes that switching to a back three has helped David Luiz thrive in Chelsea’s defence this season.

The Blues started the season playing a traditional four-man defence but new boss Antonio Conte quickly switched to a 3-4-3 formation after back to back defeats by both Arsenal and Liverpool.

The west London side have not looked back – Chelsea are currently flying high at the top of the Premier League table and are just two wins from lifting the title.

Luiz returned to Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain last summer and has been a regular fixture in the heart of the Blues’ defence.

And former England manager Hoddle feels that the switch to a 3-4-3 formation has helped to bring out the best of Luiz this season.

Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, Hoddle said: “Going with a back three has helped Luiz.

“His problem was his defending [but] he’s been brilliant this year because he’s had two centre-backs either side of him. He doesn’t get stretched or have to go into the corners.

“Plus, from that position he can actually pick a pass and be a playmaker.”
