Arsene Wenger: This Arsenal starlet looked frozen, he played within himself

Arsene Wenger felt that Rob Holding produced a nervous performance in Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Manchester United at The Emirates on Sunday.

The Gunners signed the Bolton Wanderers defender in a deal last summer, but Holding has found his first-team opportunities limited under Wenger this term.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a run in the starting line-up in recent weeks after the Arsenal manager opted to switch to a three-man defence following a poor run in March and April.

The Gunners starlet helped Wenger’s side to secure a 2-1 extra-time win against Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley last month.

Holding started alongside Laurent Koscielny and Nacho Monreal in the centre of defence against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

The England Under-21 international’s first-half error presented Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney with the chance to score but the club’s record goal-scorer wasted his chance.

Speaking to BBC Sport about Holding’s performance in Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Manchester United, Wenger said:

“He had a nervous start. He looked a bit frozen.

“Overall I felt he played within himself.

“It’s happened a few times. When he gains confidence, he plays very well.”
