Paul Merson has warned Jose Mourinho that Manchester United won’t win the Premier League title with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in their side.
The Red Devils signed Ibrahimovic in a free transfer from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in the 2016 summer transfer widow following Mourinho’s appointment as their new manager.
Ibrahimovic has been Manchester United’s leading goal-scorer this term after an impressive return of 28 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions to rubbish suggestions that he would struggle to adapt to English football.
The 35-year-old’s season was cut short after the veteran striker suffered a season-ending knee injury in Manchester United’s 2-1 win against Anderlecht in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final last month.
Marcus Rashford has deputised for Ibrahimovic since the striker’s injury, and the England teenager has contributed four goals in his last eight games to help Manchester United reach the Europa League last four.
Writing in his Daily Star column about Ibrahimovic’s presence in the Manchester United side, Merson said:
“Rashford has the pace to scare defenders and stretch the game. Rashford has got it all. He’s quick, fearless, scores goals and has great movement.
“He needs to play more games, though. Imagine him playing with Antoine Griezmann, if United manage to sign the Frenchman in the summer. That would be some partnership.”
