Nathan Ake has told Chelsea fans that he is ready to step in for David Luiz in defence if needed.

The young Dutch defender came on for the final eight minutes during Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Everton on Sunday after Luiz limped off with an injury.

It is not yet known how long Luiz will be out of action for, with Chelsea not in Premier League action again until Monday night, when they take on Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge.

However, Ake has promised Blues fans that he is ready to step in if needed because he has been paying close attention to Luiz in Chelsea training.

Speaking to Chelsea’s website, Ake said: “It was a bit different but I see David train and play, so I know what the role is and I just tried to fit in.

“I’m happy. I played the FA Cup game and came on in an intense match against Everton, which shows the trust from the manager, so I appreciate it.

“This is what you play football for, the FA Cup was really big and a good platform for me to test myself on. Everton was a different kind of game, we were 2-0 up but the front players are really dangerous for them so you have to come on and be ready, I felt it went well.”

Chelsea are currently four points clear at the top of the Premier League table but that lead could be cut down to just one point when Tottenham take on West Ham United at the London Stadium on Friday night.
