Paul Merson believes Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante manages to cover more areas of the pitch than club legend Claude Makelele.
The France international has been a revelation in his first season at Stamford Bridge after managing to transform Chelsea into Premier League title favourites.
Kante moved to Chelsea from defending champions Leicester City after the holding midfielder played a key role in the Foxes’s unprecedented Premier League triumph.
The defensive midfielder has even managed to score two goals in the 2016-17 campaign against Chelsea’s bitter rivals Manchester United in the Premier League and the FA Cup.
Kante was named amongst the six nominees for the PFA player of the year award following his dominant performances in Antonio Conte’s first-team this season.
The France star has naturally earned comparisons with Chelsea’s former title-winning midfielder Claude Makelele.
However, former Arsenal star Merson believes Kante covers even more ground than the retired Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder.
“To win the title with two different clubs is some doing, and he’s been a massive part of both Leicester and now Chelsea. He’s everywhere on the pitch,” Merson wrote in The Daily Star.
“I’ve never seen a player so fit, but he never ends up on the floor, giving fouls away. He’s always nicking it away, and you can’t get past him. People compare him to Claude Makelele but they’re different players. Makelele just used to sit in front of the back four and mop things up. Kante is all over the place.”
